Skipping the line at the start. The audio guides made the museum experience great. Seeing the Mona Lisa but moreover the large painting behind it depicting the wedding where Jesus performed his first miracle.

With the pre-purchased ticket, you could enter the castle immediately and there was no waiting time. That was great. I can totally recommend Praktisch. The castle is beautiful, everything on site is clean and tidy.

Having visited Paris several times over the years, I decided to take the family along. Knowing the queues for the museum we booked the fast track (timed) tickets and on arrival were thankful for doing so. The (normal) queue was several hundred metres in length. Whilst the fast track did not give you immediate entry, it was well worth paying the extra. We waited approximately 15 minutes. The museum itself was simply stunning and was able to enthuse our two boys also. On reflection I would probably start on the top floor (5th I believe) and work our way down. I have always been a fan of Impressionism and seeing the actual pieces of artwork that I have had hanging at home gave me goose bumps. Give yourself a minimum of two hours for the visit but realistically 3 hours would be best.

Top things to do in Paris

Know before you book your Louvre Museum tickets

  • Tickets to the Louvre Museum are timed, meaning you must choose a specific time slot for your visit. This ticket grants you entry to the museum within 30 minutes of your chosen slot and gives you access to the entire museum, including the temporary exhibits.
  • The Louvre sees a footfall of more than 9 million visitors yearly and most of them are here to see the famous Mona Lisa. If you are one among them, choose the hosted access ticket to the Mona Lisa to avoid the long lines and for an up-front view of the painting.
  • There are over 35,000 works of art displayed at the Louvre and it would take at least 45 days to cover them all! To cover the main artworks of the museum, consider a guided tour that not only highlights the key masterpieces but also offers insights into the museum's extensive history, perfect for first-time visitors.
  • On the other hand, if you wish to explore the museum at your own pace and cover the artworks of your interest, opt for an audio guided tour.
  • For an extended evening visit, the Louvre is open late on Wednesdays and Fridays until 9pm. Visiting the Louvre at night offers a magical and less crowded experience, allowing you to admire masterpieces like the Mona Lisa in a more intimate setting. The museum's stunning architecture, including the illuminated glass pyramid, creates a breathtaking atmosphere.
  • After visiting the Louvre, you could consider combining tickets with a Seine River cruise where you can recreate the historical magic while sailing past Paris's iconic landmarks.

The Louvre Palace

The Louvre Palace is an impressive structure with its classic Renaissance architecture and large, open courtyards. This epic building, dating back to the 12th century, started out as a fortress built by King Philip II. Fast forward a bit, and it transformed into a magnificent castle between 1364 and 1380. After the French Revolution, it became the world-renowned Louvre Museum we know today.

The Pyramid

The Louvre Pyramid, with its sleek glass design, stands in striking contrast to the historic palace that surrounds it. Designed by architect I. M. Pei, this modern structure, standing 70 feet tall, serves as the main entrance to the museum, flooding the space below with natural light. It has over 670 glass pieces, and apart from being such an iconic structure, is also the main entrance to the Louvre. In addition to the main glass pyramid, there are three smaller pyramids surrounding it, which enhance the visual symmetry of the courtyard. Snap that perfect selfie here!

New to the Louvre? Here's a quick explainer of the layout

So, it's your first time here and you're feeling a bit like a kid in a candy store—where do you even start? Let’s break it down for you. The Louvre is divided into three main wings: Denon, Richelieu, and Sully. Each wing is spread across different levels and has its own vibe and treasures.

Denon Wing

The Denon Wing is like the main stage at Coachella, and the Mona Lisa is the headliner. When you step into this wing, head straight to Room 711 to see Leonardo da Vinci's most famous lady. Look out for The Wedding at Cana by Veronese (a stunning 70 square meter grand banquet scene), which is literally the largest painting in the Louvre. It's so big, you'll feel like you're part of the banquet! Don't miss Liberty Leading the People by Delacroix either.

Richelieu Wing

Feeling fancy? Then head over to the Richelieu Wing. The highlight here is the lavish apartments of Napoleon III. You’ll be floored by the chandeliers, the gilded furniture, and the sheer decadence of it all. Don't miss the statue of Marly Horses; they’re dramatic, dynamic, and absolutely Insta-worthy. And if you're into history, the collection of Near Eastern antiquities will transport you back to the days of ancient empires.

Sully Wing

Last but not least, the Sully Wing is your gateway to ancient civilizations. Start your adventure by exploring the Egyptian Antiquities section. Here, you'll find mummies, sphinxes, and all sorts of treasures that will make you feel like Indiana Jones. The Sully Wing also houses the medieval foundations of the Louvre. You can walk through the remains of this medieval structure. It's dark, mysterious, and super cool.

Here is an in-depth guide to the different levels at the Louvre Museum and the artworks you can see in each wing.
