Villa Cavrois I The Modernist marvel of Croix
Picture this: a mansion in the 1930s with clean lines and geometric forms that makes you think it belongs to the minimalism we see on Pinterest today. Not a regular sight in the French countryside, the Villa Cavrois nestled in Croix is the perfect example of the modern era architecture– exotic decor, functional features and harmonious design. Designed by architect Robert Mallet-Stevens and commissioned by Paul Cavrois, a wealthy textile industrialist, the villa, conceived as a family home, was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.

Why visit Villa Cavrois
The sheer architectural brilliance
Way ahead of its time, the architecture of Villa Cavrois is an art that should be studied at universities! You wouldn't be surprised that it is referred to as a "modern castle" due to its imposing layout and the traditional French chateau design while embracing modern aesthetics.
A modern vision
The villa is a prime example of Modernism– a movement inof the 20th century that sought to break away from traditional styles, as its minimalism, and emphasis on functionality with gardens and large windows reflects the Modernist philosophy of harmony between architecture and the environment.
All about the decor
If the exterior of Villa Cavrois leaves you awestruck, wait till you see what’s on the inside! With the use of natural materials such as wood and stone creating a warm and inviting ambiance, the living space is complete with a collection of original and period pieces– it’s elegant and all things comfy.
A peek at temporary exhibitions
Didn't get enough of everything decor and architecture? Fret not, as the villa hosts various exhibitions by showcasing contemporary design and art within its historic setting, with artists like Fabrice Hyber, Fien Muller, and Hannes Van Severen having set up their works for connoisseurs in the past!
Things to know before booking your Villa Cavrois tickets

What to see at Villa Cavrois
The rooms
Villa Cavrois has a number of beautiful rooms, each meticulously designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens. From the grand main hall to the master suites, children's rooms, and servants' quarters, each room has its own unique ambiance, as materials, colors and lighting were all carefully chosen to create diverse moods, all contributing to the villa's vision as a "total work of art."
The collections
A fan of the artistic movements of the 1930s? Good news, as at Villa Cavrois you can see works of movements including Art Deco, De Stijl, Viennese Secession and Bauhaus! Interestingly, many of the villa's pieces were specially designed for the building, like a sycamore veneer dressing table in Lucie Cavrois's boudoir. You will also find sculptures by the Martel brothers, such as the stylized stone stoat displayed on the mantelpiece in the living room.
The furniture
Home is where the furniture is, and at the villa, each room’s furniture was tailor-made to reflect the needs and status of its occupants! The architect Mallet-Stevens blended luxury and simplicity with materials like wood, aluminum, and steel, navigating the boundaries between Art Deco and Modernism. While the furniture for the masters is sophisticated, that for the servants is more functional and austere.
The water mirror
One of the villa’s most iconic features, the water mirror stretches 72 meters and reflects the villa’s south façade– it isn't just a pretty addition, it's a seamless extension of the villa's architecture, creating stunning visual effects that photographers and Instagrammers adore! Once filled in during World War II, the mirror has been restored to its former glory and is now a centerpiece for all those who visit the villa.
The park
Need a breath of fresh air -after exploring the insides of the villa? Head to the park, a perfect blend of nature and human design! Originally sprawling across five hectares, the park was partially divided in the 1990s. However, the heart of the park, including the reflective water mirror, was preserved and restored to its former glory. Stroll through rose gardens, vegetable patches, and avenues that mimic the precision of classic gardens.
