Some tips on how to eat like a local in Paris

  • Lunch and dinner hours: Paris runs on its own clock when it comes to meals. Lunch is usually served from 12pm to 2:30pm. Most restaurants won’t seat new diners after that. Dinner typically starts late, around 7:30pm, and stretches well into the night. Early birds? Aim for 7pm, you’ll likely have the place to yourself.
  • Ask for “Une Carafe d’Eau”: Tap water in Paris is perfectly drinkable and always free. If you simply ask for water, you’ll often be brought a pricey bottled version. Say “une carafe d’eau, s’il vous plaît” for a complimentary jug of tap water.
  • Tipping and gratuity: Service is already included in your bill (service compris), so tipping isn’t mandatory. Still, locals often round up or leave 5–10% as a thank-you for great service, especially at sit-down restaurants.
  • Don’t rush your meal: Expect leisurely service, since dining here is an experience, not a pit stop. Courses arrive slowly so you can savour every bite (and the conversation). If you’re in a hurry, politely ask for “l’addition, s’il vous plaît” when you’re ready to leave.
  • Coffee comes last: In France, coffee is part of the finale, not the beginning. You’ll usually have your espresso after dessert, not with it.
