Paleis van Versailles
The former French royal residence, is the centerpiece of the estate, attracting 10 million visitors annually.
With 700 rooms, including iconic spaces like the Hall of Mirrors and Royal Opera, the Palace showcases the pomp of the French monarchy in the late 1700s. Most first-time visitors tend to focus their visit on the palace.
Designed by André Le Nôtre, the Gardens of Versailles are a stunning example of French landscape design, featuring ornate fountains, sculptures, and groves.
If you're visiting between April and October, attend the Musical Fountain Shows, where fountains and water features are synchronized to Baroque music. Note: access to the Gardens during these shows requires a special ticket.
Beyond the gardens lies the Park, spanning about 800 hectares. This vast area is crisscrossed by straight paths that divide wooded areas and agricultural fields, offering stunning views of the palace and gardens.
Key features include the 1,670-meter Grand Canal, and the 12-hectare Lake of the Swiss Guard. The Park is ideal for those who enjoy long walks and exploring less crowded parts of the estate.
The Trianon Estate, nestled near the Petit Park, served as a retreat for kings seeking to escape the formalities of court life. This area includes the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon, and the Queen’s Hamlet, surrounded by ornamental gardens.
This area is perfect for visitors who have already explored the main Palace and are interested in the personal lives of the French monarchy.

There are several ticket options for the Palace of Versailles, including standard entry tickets, skip-the-line tickets, guided tours, day trips from Paris, and combined tickets, including access to the Trianon Estate and the Gardens. Choose the one that best suits your itinerary.
The Palace-only ticket grants you timed entry to the Palace and access to the temporary exhibitions, the Gallery of Coaches, the Sculptures and Mouldings Gallery, the Royal Tennis Court, the Gardens, and the Park. In addition to the above accesses, a passport ticket grants you entry to the Estate of Trianon.
Access to the Palace Gardens is only sometimes included with your ticket. If it doesn’t mention it, you’ll always have the option to upgrade it.
Yes, access to these requires separate tickets; unless either is already included in your current ticket.
Yes, you can. Trianon and Marie-Antoinette Estate Skip-the-Line Tickets grant you access to the Trianon Estate only; not the Palace.
If you arrive late, you may have to wait for the next available time slot. You should arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled entry time.
A guided tour, led by an expert, provides timed insights and access to restricted areas of the estate, while an audio guide allows for a more flexible, self-paced visit. Choose based on your budget and personal preference.
Ticket-wise, entry is free:
- The first Sunday of every month from November–March.
- EU adults under the age of 26 years.
- Non-EU adults under the age of 18 years.
- Teachers and schoolchildren in a French establishment (proof of Pass Education card is required).
Activity-wise, thematic visits are offered during school holidays, on Wednesdays and weekends, to explore the collections in a fun and participatory way with a mediator. Tickets for these must be purchased separately, at an additional cost. There are also plenty of (free) downloadable game booklets to introduce children to the Palace, which will teach them about the different areas of the estate.
If you’re traveling from Paris, opt for a ticket that provides round-trip bus transfers from a central point in Paris (either the Eiffel Tower or Palais Garnier). They are logistically workable and save you the hassle of figuring out transportation.
You can photograph or film works in the permanent collection for personal use, but not for commercial purposes. Photography is usually prohibited in temporary exhibitions unless stated otherwise. To protect the artworks, flash photography, and extendable monopods are not allowed.
Animals are prohibited in the Palace, Gardens, and Trianon Estate, but are allowed in the Park. Guide dogs are permitted throughout the entire Estate with valid proof.
The tickets can’t be canceled or rescheduled.
